Pillow Voices

dialogue editing, music editing, scoring, mixing, mastering

Location: Becket, Massachusetts.

Jacob's Pillow has been called “one of America’s most precious cultural assets” by Mikhail Baryshnikov, and “the dance center of the nation” by The New York Times.  Containing the most comprehensive dance archives in the country, Jacob's Pillow had a wealth of media available online via their Dance Interactive initiative, but the organization wanted to bring their archival audio to life in a new way. The result was Pillow Voices: Dances Through Time.

Over the course of the project, I edited, scored, sound designed, mixed, and mastered the first 43 episodes of the show (with the exception of episode 42 for which I was sidelined with Covid) as well as having directed and recorded multiple episodes in my studio.

A large part of my work on the project was bringing dilapidated recordings back to life.  Restoring 70 year old recordings is about more than just extracting understandability, it’s about artistically striking a balance between the patina which makes archival audio feel nostalgic and powerful, the modern fidelity contemporary audiences are accustomed to.
